Sandals of general Ikhi. Phot. Jarosław Dąbrowski/PCMA

The wooden sandal soles bear no traces of wear, suggesting that they were never actually worn, but were intended for the deceased to be used in the afterlife. Their upper parts, which would resemble modern flip-flops, did not survive, but were likely made of plaited reed or leather. Displayed is a replica of the sandal soles found in the tomb of an anonymous 6th Dynasty official at Saqqara. Merefnebef is depicted on both side walls of the entrance to his funerary chapel wearing similar sandals.
